A New Life from a New Roof

Your home is your sanctuary, your refuge and your escape, and a place where you’re supposed to feel safe and secure. But what happens when you don’t feel safe anymore? When you find yourself working tirelessly day in and day out to meet the needs of yourself as well as three children, and your home is somewhere where you don’t feel safe?

For one single mother, raising three children in Madison County, NC, this was her reality. With a leaking roof and mold plaguing her space, she no longer felt safe in her own home. She worried for the health and well-being of her own children and looked to the Community Housing Coalition in Madison County for support. With funding from Pisgah Health Foundation grants, the coalition rallied behind this single mom of three, not by repairing the roof, but by installing a new metal roof that will last for many years to come. Now, this mom can steer her focus away from the leaky roof, knowing her family is safe and healthy under a brand-new roof, thanks to this wonderful non-profit in Madison County.

The Madison County Housing Coalition was able to make a difference in this family’s life with support and funding from grants awarded by Pisgah Health Foundation and Dogwood Health Trust. Donations from people like you are crucial in continuing our impact in Western North Carolina. Sometimes it’s a single mom of three, sometimes it’s a widowed grandmother, or sometimes it’s your own neighbor that needs a little help. Don’t turn away, turn towards your community, and donate to help the needs of those in our area.

Championing Life Changes in Our Community

For many people when something's broken, you fix it, but for others, they simply don't have the means or the ability to fix it on their own. It could be something as simple as a broken toilet that alters your life, just like it did for an elderly gentleman named Curtis.

Living alone in his home and on a fixed income, 80-year-old Curtis found himself sleeping on his own couch in order to stay close to his only working bathroom during the night. Unfortunately, the primary bathroom's toilet had partially fallen through the floor, causing unsafe and unsanitary conditions which were beyond what Curtis could repair on his own.

In situations like this, your community can play a crucial role in your own livelihood. For Curtis, the local non-profit, Mountain Projects, was able to utilize funds from a home repair grant by Pisgah Health Foundation and Dogwood Health Trust to make repairs in his home. The funding not only allowed him to repair his bathroom and flooring, but also allowed him the opportunity to sleep in his own bed again.

Donations do more than repair...they renew. Donations provide a sense of hope, happiness and even independence, and can improve the lives of many people.

At Pisgah Health Foundation, we thrive off of stories from individuals and non-profits who are positively impacted by the generosity of our community and other non-profits like Dogwood . If you feel inspired by Curtis's story or one of the many other stories of those whose lives have been improved by donations and volunteers, consider donating to a local non-profit like Pisgah Health Foundation, or by volunteering your time to help those in need. Together, we can champion change in our communities.
